Frans Krajcberg invited me to his home near the village of Nova Vicosa
in the state of Bahia in Brasil and from there we went on a trip to
photograph the strip mines of Minas Gerais.

Frans is arguably the most well-known visual artist for
Brazilians. His works figure in many museum collections around the
world and the government of the city of Vitoria in Brazil established
a museum to preserve his works. He won a medal at the Venice
Biennial in 1956. Among his friends were Chagall, Braque, Dubuffet,
Baumeister, Nolde, Pierre Restany... to name just a few. I am not
capable to describe the importance of his work but he has had a long
and important career.

Frans is also known for his environmental activism. He has decried the
burning of the forests since the 1950's and he has paricipated in many
conferences and actions in order to protect the land. His art is made
of materials he finds on his travels through the country, and his
later work has involved burned forms, hommage to the fatal beauty of
fire and the destoyed forest.

A semi-official Frans Kracberg website is in French:

A click on links to "Sculptures", "Tableaux" and "Photos" there will
give you a good idea of the power and beauty of Frans' art.

An excellent article on Krajcberg, written by Leon Kaplan for ArtFocus Magazine:
